Arsenal, Barcelona and Lyon headline the UWCL quarter-finals as Europe’s top clubs race toward the final in Oslo.

UWCL quarter-finals set as Europe’s elite battle for the crown

The UEFA Women’s Champions League is entering its decisive stage as the quarter-finals approach, with Europe’s biggest clubs now just a few matches away from the final in Oslo.

Eight teams remain in contention for the most prestigious trophy in women’s club football. With defending champions Arsenal still in the tournament and traditional giants such as Barcelona and Lyon also progressing, the race for the crown remains wide open.

As the competition moves deeper into the knockout phase, every match now carries enormous stakes.

The defending champions

Arsenal enter the quarter-finals with the confidence of the reigning European champions.

Last season the London club defeated Barcelona in the final to lift the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy, adding another historic moment to the club’s legacy.

The victory was followed by another milestone earlier this year. In February 2026 Arsenal became the first winners of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup, defeating Brazilian side Corinthians in the final and effectively being crowned the best club team in the world.

Much of Arsenal’s attacking threat continues to come from Alessia Russo, who is among the tournament’s top scorers with seven goals this season.

Barcelona and Lyon remain major threats

Despite Arsenal’s recent success, the road to the trophy remains extremely difficult.

Barcelona once again arrive as one of the most complete teams in Europe. The Spanish champions boast a squad filled with world-class talent, including Ballon d’Or winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí, whose creativity and technical dominance continue to define the club’s attacking identity.

Alongside them, experienced defender Irene Paredes and Norwegian winger Caroline Graham Hansen provide balance and quality, making Barcelona one of the most dangerous teams left in the competition.

Meanwhile Olympique Lyonnais remain the most successful club in the history of the tournament and continue to be a serious contender every season.

The quarter-final bracket

The knockout stage has produced several fascinating matchups as the road to the final becomes clearer.

The quarter-final ties include:

  • Arsenal vs Chelsea
  • Real Madrid vs Barcelona
  • Bayern Munich vs Manchester United
  • Wolfsburg vs Lyon

One of the most interesting stories this season comes from Manchester United, who have reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in the club’s history.

The race for the Golden Boot

Several players have delivered outstanding performances throughout the campaign.

Among them is Arsenal striker Alessia Russo, whose seven goals place her among the tournament’s most prolific scorers this season.

With the knockout stage approaching, the race for the Golden Boot remains wide open as Europe’s top forwards continue their push for individual honours.

Manchester United’s historic breakthrough

Another notable storyline this season is the progress of Manchester United Women.

The club, re-established only in 2018, has now reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time in its history — a remarkable achievement for one of England’s fastest-growing teams.

Their quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich could become one of the most intriguing ties of the round.

The road to Oslo

The 2026 UEFA Women’s Champions League final will take place on 23 May at Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo, Norway.

Historically the competition has often been dominated by a small group of elite clubs — particularly Lyon — but the modern landscape of women’s football is becoming increasingly competitive.

With investment growing across England, Spain, Germany and France, the gap between Europe’s top sides continues to narrow.

As the quarter-finals approach, the race for the Champions League trophy is entering its most dramatic phase.
